Sun Protection: Blue Lizard Sunscreen Review

I recently received my very first VoxBox from Influenster. I don’t often get pretty purple boxes full of complimentary products in the mail, so let’s just say I was a bit excited. There may or may not have been dancing involved. Here is a quick little pic (of the VoxBox, not the dancing) …

If you’re not familiar with Influenster, here is how it all works. Go to Influenster.com and sign up. You will then fill out questionnaires and quizzes about all sorts of different products and brands. Basically, you earn “badges” with such titles as Fashionista, Pets, Beauty Queen, Jetsetter, Decorator, Fitness, etc…etc….

Apparently, Influenster thinks I’m deserving of the “Nurture” box. I’ve never really considered myself much of a nurturer, but if it means I get to try out lots of cool products, I’m all for it.

As you can see from the picture above, there are quite a few awesome products to try. Today, however, I’m going to focus on one of my favorites, and that is the Blue Lizard sunscreen.

From theme parks, water slides and boardwalk bike riding to beaches, pools, jet skis and boat time, my family and I spend a lot of time in the sun. I’m a really big advocate of wearing sunscreen. One, I’ve had many a sunburn in my careless youth. Two, I’ve read far too many tales of skin cancer. And three, lizards are cute, but I certainly don’t want to look like one.

One of the most fun, and functional, things about Blue Lizard sunscreen is the BPA-free plastic cap. The normally clear cap turns blue when exposed to UV rays, which reminds you to reapply. The brighter the blue becomes, the more UV rays that are present. I seem to have a hard time remembering to reapply, so this is a great feature for me.

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen Sensitive is SPF 30+ broad spectrum UVA/UVB and is made of high quality minerals, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for superb skin protection. It’s dermatologist-recommended and formulated for every day protection on the face and body. It is chemical-free, paraben-free and fragrance-fee. A three-ounce tube is about $14.99.

There is also a Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen Sport version. I received a small sample of it, but I haven’t tried it yet. It is extremely water resistant and meets Australian standards of 240 minutes in whirlpool water. It comes in SPF 30+ broad spectrum UVA/UVB. A three-ounce tube is approximately $12.99.

Australia’s standards for sunscreen are the highest in the world. Even though Blue Lizard is now manufactured in the U.S., they still adhere to these strict standards, which is probably one of the reasons it’s the brand most recommended by dermatologists and pediatricians. They also don’t test on animals.

Overall, I really liked the product. It isn’t too thick, so it goes on nice and smooth. I’m not a fan of greasy, slimy sunscreen, and Blue Lizard is perfect on the texture front. We were out on the boat for at least two or three hours with no hint of sunburn. That is a win/win in my opinion.

As a migraine sufferer, I always try to buy fragrance-free products, but I actually love the scent of most sunscreens. Who doesn’t want to smell like the tropics all day long? I did notice a very subtle fragrance with Blue Lizard, which was pleasant and not overwhelming at all. The scent did fade away after a while.

The only suggestion I would make is to have it available in a spray version. As active as we are, we’re kinda on the lazy side when it comes to rubbing in all of that lotion. We like to just spray and go. Other than that, I give Blue Lizard two thumbs up.

Blue Lizard has a full line of sun protection products that includes ones especially formulated for babies, faces, and sensitive skin. Check out the rest of the family at BlueLizard.net.
