Travels with Saint Christopher and a Discount from Get Back Supply Co.

I received a Saint Christopher “coin” as a Secret Santa gift several years ago. At the time, I hadn’t heard of Saint Christopher and his penchant for the protection of travelers, adventurers, and other roamers. I don’t even remember who gave it to me, but, considering my love of travel, it was the perfect gift.

According to legend, St. Christopher was incredibly tall, nearly 7 1/2 feet, and had a fearsome face. In the 13th century, he was described as a wandering adventurer. As the legend goes, he was assigned the task of carrying travelers across a dangerous river. He is also the patron saint of mariners and boaters, and the medallion is worn to protect against severe weather and other dangers. St. Christopher is also a popular symbol for military members and service men and women.

I’ve since discovered that St. Christopher played a part in the California surfing scene of the ’60s. Surfers would wear the emblem on necklaces, anklets, or bracelets for protection in the water. On land, they would exchange these medallions, which meant that they were “going steady.” How groovy is that?

My St. Christopher medallion has traveled with me on many adventures that include, but are not limited to, snorkeling in the British Virgin Islands, cruising the coastlines of the Florida Keys, strolling down Duval Street in Key West, and wandering around theme parks such as Walt Disney World, Universal, and SeaWorld Parks. He’s seen sand on beaches from Virginia to North and South Carolina and Florida, gone stand-up paddleboarding in the Outer Banks, boating in the Gulf of Mexico, and horseback riding along Virginia Beach.

Over the years, I tried to find other items bearing the likeness of this traveling saint but with no luck. I recently came across Get Back Supply Company, which has been selling the original St. Christopher surf necklace for the past 16 years.

Here are a couple of my most recent purchases. I simply adore the royal blue/silver anklet. The pink/silver charm is a necklace, and I plan to purchase a larger charm to wear as a pair. I purchased the green/silver one without a chain, and I’ll eventually attach it to a necklace or anklet. These are all small charms. They come in small, medium, and large.

One of the really cool features of the medium and large charms is the embossed surfer on the back.

It seems St. Christopher has gained a following with the Hollywood set as well. Actress Blake Lively is seen wearing a St. Christopher necklace in The Shallows.
